A Philosophical Musing.

The rigors of life often hamper our truth-seeking efforts — the search and meaning of our existence.

In this context, it is important  to connect with ourselves for that elusive transitory contentment. There have been some brilliant poets of the past era who have taken this inner reflection into realms beyond — manifesting it through poetry in various languages.

One such poem, rendered through a song in Hindi, inspired me to write this piece, giving it my take in English, and I hope — in the process — it pays tribute to the genius of the poet and all those poets who were the unceasing seekers of the truth.

The poet refers to the two-faced world we live in, the broken promises, the meaningless relationships, etc. The context and substance of the poem can always be debated, but there can be no denial of the sense of truth in its illustration…

Promises, love and assurances,

just words, empty and hollow.

No one in this world belongs to anyone,

these relationships (we live) are ephemeral,

A fact hard to swallow.

Life’s journey continues to be no guarantee,

Neither are our close associations,

Our own kith and kin may turn against us,

Sad truth about man and creation.

We live in lies, behind the beautiful façade of words…

putting on false shows.

Revering holy creeds,

But forgetting our neighbor’s anguish and blows.

The true essence of our religion is forgotten,

Interpreting it to our own whim and taste.

So full of ourselves, that even the messiah today would be conveniently ignored

life lived in such haste.

As for people, they will continue to be selfish and insincere,

happy with us in our good times and discarding us in our pain –

promising us the world today,

and breaking it the next second, with disdain.

Yes! They do it with a nonchalant attitude towards the Almighty,

to the Absolute, so who are you, oh mortal man, to complain?

Promises, love and assurances — just words, empty and hollow.

No one belongs to anyone these relationships (we live) are ephemeral,

a fact hard to swallow…
