Have A Little Faith, Wake Up To Your Own True Nature.

“No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one’s laughing at God
When they’re starving or freezing or so very poor

No one laughs at God
When the doctor calls after some routine tests
No one’s laughing at God
When it’s gotten real late
And their kid’s not back from the party yet” ~ Regina Spektor

My brilliant brother, who has been through some serious shit, would always say to me, “Val, there’s no atheists in foxholes.”

That may be a true statement. When I was brought to my knees and my whole world was going black, who did I turn to? My cat? No, I begged for my life, howling for some relief and pleading to be saved from the heartache. And I knew in that moment that only God could save me. Not my best friend, not my family, not my priest or my therapist… only God.

Call it what you will — God, the Universe, Great Spirit, a gal or a guy in a white robe floating in the sky — it doesn’t matter what language you use, it’s all the same thing. It’s an energy much greater than yourself that in one second can change the course of your life.

After my mother passed away, I slipped into a debilitating depression. My only hope at the time seemed to be to take my own life. One day, I shattered into pieces on the floor of my shower. As the water pounded on my back, I begged and screamed out for someone, anyone, to help me.

I prayed like I have never prayed before, for God to either help me die or help me live. Within two weeks, I had a life-changing experience through learning to meditate… and in 20 minutes I was reborn. Looking back, I can clearly see God was just holding me in loving arms and baptizing me with Grace and pure love. Since that day, I’ve never looked back.

“God can be funny,
When told he’ll give you money if you just pray the right way
And when presented like a genie who does magic like Houdini
Or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket and Santa Claus
God can be so hilarious” ~ Regina Spektor

It’s all fun and games till you break or a loved one is going down. Before that point, you might be an atheist or a part-time believer. Y’know, praying for stuff and treating God like Father Christmas. That seems to me to be an illusory version of spirituality, an immature version of faith.

What makes sense to me is we don’t pray to get what we want or to influence God to steer things in the direction we think is best. We pray to be shown God’s way. Not our way.

I believe that in every person’s life, we will all hit that point. Our world will go dark. And in that moment, you’ll be shown who you are… what you are made of. And right then, you will make decisions that will change the course of your life.

It’s your defining moment, your chance to navigate your boat to a new-and-improved place in the River of Life and be the person God created you to be. That is why we are given these opportunities. How else will we ever wake up to our own true nature?

We can use the painful, challenging experiences we encounter to learn our best lessons. They can be viewed as times when we can choose to amp up our focus on what’s important… and decide to tighten up our relationship with the Higher Power of our own understanding.

Anyone who has walked down a lonely and painful road knows exactly what I’m talking about. No explanation is necessary. But, for those who have no idea what I’m saying, remember these words: In your darkest hour, faith will carry you on the wings of angels.
