A Hopeful, Post-Election Tarot Card Reading.

The election is over.

It’s been a long, hard slog for the United States. Everyone, on both sides, is rightly exhausted. Many are left hurting, fearful for their future and the future of the country.

But come January 2017, the change is going to happen regardless of which side you’re on. America is getting a new president.

For some, that may be good news. But there are many who feel differently.

So as we move ahead, the question becomes this: how do we heal and move forward when our country is so deeply divided?

Tarot has something to say about that.

What We Need to Know:

Nine of Swords: The figure in the Nine of Swords card sits upright in bed, head in his hands.

Fear is the underlying element of this card. It drove this election, and now many are left with new worries about their future. Our country is dealing with collective anxiety, and the only way to heal it is by facing it directly. Start by examining where you may be feeling scared. What’s been keeping you up at night? What are you anticipating for the country going forward?

Find those tender places within yourself and treat them with love. Extend that to others as well. We must invite others into our lives and listen, so we can fully understand their concerns and the issues they may be facing. This leads to compassion, which is needed at this time if we want to heal as individuals and as a nation.

What We Need to Do:

The Hierophant: Decked out in regal clothing like a Pope, the Hierophant is the card of the teacher, which means we need to seek answers and educate each other.

Take the time to understand the different people and cultures that make up this great nation. Don’t hide under a bubble that only looks like you or agrees with you. We may not believe the same, but we breathe the same air.

Do keep in mind though that this card is also symbolic of sacred space, which means respecting other people. You don’t have to agree with anyone but you can still take the moral high ground and be decent. If, however, you are not being shown the same, it is perfectly appropriate to set boundaries because everyone deserves to feel safe, both in real life and online.

How to Move Ahead:

Knight of Cups: The Knight of Cups leads with his heart.

No matter what happens, the Knight of Cups never loses sight of that. He spreads a message of love, positivity, and peace. Be that. Don’t give in to hate. Be a good ambassador with your message and your actions. If every one of us can do that, we can all move forth as winners.

Because that is ultimately what we need to remember: no matter which side lost, we can all win if we listen, learn, and love.

As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. so wisely said: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: Only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: Only love can do that.”

Spoken like a true Knight of Cups.
