Monsters guard the gates. Ask how you may serve and you shall cross. You are needed. Go.
For at every true threshold
Monsters guard the gates
of the otherwise unimaginable.
To imagine
the impossible
is deeply human.
To make meaningful and unpopular
distinctions to suss out
the power to act
not just to feel
but to align what we feel, think
say with what we do;
to open and clear out
old chapters
of dead lies
we’ve been telling
ourselves and feeding a culture
Is to free the energy in the soul
of all people
to be here
safe, free, alive, inspired.
Coalescing our will to act
we need to move as one wave
to shake down the facts
that guide the soul
beyond what distracts
we speak from the heart
inconvenient provocations
to wake
the ones knocked out
by hatred and denial
numb to what it is
to be plainly human —
unprotected by things
and genuinely vulnerable.
Time to assassinate invisible patterns
locked in a systemic structure
of injustice buried deep
and rising up
as our collective undoing
cries out for a new world.
Time to throw
ourselves naked
and prostituted
to the silky and ready unknown
with nowhere to hide anymore
inside the naiveté
of American-born privilege
and bargained-for comforts
re-minding each other
there never was.
Tossed by gravity,
free from the paralysis
of easy answers
rousted from slumber
we learn to do what
scares us
enlivens our soul
alarms our affection
for protection
makes us confront
our culture-bound ego,
what blinds
and keeps us
from stepping into
the courage to act
authentically, dangerously
in all the ways we
had not planned.
We come to stand
for something real
and honorable.
Make our relations honest,
edgy with vulnerability,
raw with demonstrable
ethical conviction
to ruin our name
in the eyes of false
and flimsy impressions
seeking to please
and fit in.
We take a side
and go strong
for what is life-giving
to our true nature
not to our status in the world of men
but to our soul
and the soul of the earth
while we courageously
end or alter every relationship
system and structure
that does not.
This is where we are.
This, a time of monsters,
we cannot intellectualize outrage
or sanitize anger,
dress it up
as socially acceptable.
This time, we will not be
overwhelmed by corrupted power’s
parasitic presence,
the madness
in the way
it wears us down,
makes us pliable,
susceptible to the twisted notion
that we can metabolize poison
by contorting our soul
while Rome burns.
Unbridled, having spat out the bit
torn off the chains,
we lavishly risk our self,
fuck the disapproval
of the ones addicted to
safe and small structures
and systems, shiny
and mothered to bits.
Responsible. We are ruthlessly generous
active in our compassion, subversive
and with affection
discerning enough to be
tender, liberated
by death’s crackling intelligence.
Shaken enough to recognize
a cosmos
conspiring in an endless provocation
to love.
